Scouts in action:

Parker Davidson with Troop 985 completed his Eagle project of refurbishing the playground at East Whittier Methodist School, Parker had the help of 15 or more Scouts and their parents. Awesome job Parker and scouts

Anthony Grimaldi attended Murphy Elementary School in Whittier, California. Some people wait years to give back to their Schools, Communities or people that have made an impact on their lives. Anthony, at his young age and before he finished High School decided to give back to the Elementary School he attended for pointing him in the right direction.

On August 28, 2021 Anthony Grimaldi Troop 546, and his family and friends gathered at Murphy Ranch Elementary School in Whittier to complete his Eagle Project.  He refurbished the wood benches along with making a GaGa Pit for the children at the school.  We would like to thank everyone for supporting his Eagle Fundraiser and helping out to complete his project.

Christopher Nickell from Troop 438 celebrated the achievements of Eagle Scout Christopher Nickell with an in-person ceremony August 14th at St. Andrew Lutheran Church.  Christopher’s achievements were extensive during his Trail to Eagle adventure.  He completed 136 merit badges, earned all 4 religious emblems and held almost all leadership positions within his Troop.  His ceremony was celebrated with the participation of the Mayor of Whittier and Pro-tem Mayor of the City of La Mirada along with 20 Eagle Scouts in the Eagles nest.  Christopher’s untiring self-determination to reach a goal is what drove him to all the accomplishments he has achieved. We celebrate Christopher Nickell and all the Eagle Scouts who overcame the issues of the last year and half to reach for their goals and accomplish them.

History Corner

By Lou Smith, Pio Pico District Vice Chair

We are the Pio Pico District. But how did we get to where we are? Well, back in 1922 the BSA chartered the San Antonio District Council which included the eastern half of Los Angeles County north of Long Beach. The area from Whittier to what is now Cerritos, including Downey, South Gate, Huntington Park and Bell was called the Rio Hondo District. In 1934 San Antonio District Council merged with Los Angeles District Council to form the Los Angeles Metropolitan Council. The Rio Hondo District was reduced in size with the more populous areas of South Gate, Huntington Park and Bell becoming The San Antonio District. The post-World War II years saw eastern LA County change from farms to homes; and those homes experienced the Baby Boom. By 1955 the Rio Hondo District was bulging with scouts - Cubs, Boy Scouts and Explorers - so it was divided into two new districts - Pioneer and Frontier. 1974 saw some district changes and Pioneer District grew toward Montebello and East Los Angeles and was named Rio Hondo – again. Additions to Rio Hondo were made in 1995 when San Antonio District was split up. A couple of years ago the decline in scouts caused Frontier and Rio Hondo to merge, a homecoming if you will back to earlier times. Wanting the new district name to be unique and reflect the history of our area the combined leadership opened discussions with the Pio Pico family. Pio Pico was the last Mexican Governor of Alto California. The family has graciously allowed us to name the District Pio Pico and use the family brand as our logo.

And now you know….
