Pio Pico Newsletter - March Edition

Did you know that “March” was named for the Roman God of War, Mars? It is said that this was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by the winter months. March, back in the early Roman days, was the first month of the calendar year. It is also in March that we have the first day of the Spring Equinox, which meanings were said that it was the start of new beginnings.

On February 19th, we held the Annual Pio Pico District Awards Dinner. Big thanks to everyone that came out to the dinner. It was a great seeing so many people in person again. And to those that couldn’t make it out, you were missed! We hope that you can make it out to the next one. I would also like to thank Magilla’s BBQ for an outstanding service. The food was amazing! And I cannot forget Tommy Martinez who took all the photos for us and everyone else that was involved and helped to make the night a memorable one. I’ve attached some photos for you to look back at.

On February 12th, Pio Pico held the 2nd District Pinewood Derby. The first event was back in 2019 just before Covid-19. It was a great day for a Derby race. The scouts that came out had a great time racing and followed with pizza for lunch. Thank you to Roger Reynolds and the First Methodist Church for letting us use the facility for the day and thank you to the leaders who helped us with running the event.

High Toned Affairs to Mark Anniversary Week

Father and Son Banquet is on Today's Program

Mayor Issues Proclamation Urging Co-operation.

In accordance with the national observance of the twelfth anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America, 3000 Los Angeles scouts and their leaders, have prepared what they call high toned programs, to be given tonight and every evening until, and including, Tuesday, February 14.

The Boy Scout slogan for anniversary week is the Boy Scout oath: "On my honor I mill do my best to do my duty to God and my country, to obey the Scout law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight."

A banquet to the adult leaders of the Boy Scouts will be given by President Arthur Letts and the board of trustees of the Los Angeles Council. B. S. A., at 6:30 p.m. today in the Broadway Department Store Cafe. Among the speakers will be Sylvester L. Weaver, Malcolm McNaughton, Rev. W. H. Rogers, C. A. Lyman and Dr. L. H. Miller.

                                                     TOMORROWS PROGRAM.

The program for tomorrow evening Includes a father and son banquet in each of the Boy Scout troop headquarters. Next Friday night every Boy Scout troop in Los Angeles will hold a 100 per cent troop meeting, and new members will be inducted into the organization.

Saturday night there will be mammoth rally of Scouts, leaders, parent and friends at the Poly Technic High School, beginning at 7 p.m. All Eagle Scouts will be presented to the president of the Los Angeles council. Among the Interesting features of the evening will be cornet solos by Philip Memoli, bird calls, by Dr. L, H. Miller, associate professor of biology of the University of California, and the reading by Doug Moore of Mayor Cryer's proclamation on Boy Scouts anniversary week.

                                                             SPECIAL SERVICES.

Sunday evening all Boy Scouts in uniform will attend their favorite church, and many of the churches will hold special Scout services. At the West Adams Presbyterian Church Troop 88 will assist Dr. W. H. Fishburn in conducting services, and an address on "Boy Scouts of America" will be made by Dr. E. B. DeGroot.

Next Monday evening Scout leaders will visit the homes of the parents of the boys for the purpose of talking "Scouting."

On Tuesday evening, the 14th Inst, a big theater party for all Scouts, their parents and friend will be given at Walker's Theater, 780 South Grand Avenue. The films, "Be Prepared" and “The Lone Star Patrol," in which the actors are local Boy Scouts, will be shown.

                                                    ISSUES PROCLAMATION.

Mayor Cryer yesterday Issued proclamation calling attention the anniversary celebration which begins today and continues up to and including next Wednesday. The mayor, who last Saturday was formally made a member the Boy Scouts, says in his proclamation:

"The Boy Scouts of America, an organization chartered by act of the Congress of the United States and devoted to the welfare of boys and the making of good citizens, is this week entering upon its twelfth anniversary.

"In common with other observing citizens, I believe that the program of the Boy Scouts of America reveals the way, quickens the pace and illuminates the path that leads to true and noble citizenship among our boys.

"It is fitting, therefore, that we, at this time, give due recognition to this great organization.

"I, therefore, do hereby recommend that the period marking the twelfth anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scout movement, February 8 to 14, be observed in this city as Boy Scout Week, and I strongly urge that every man, woman and child in the community, for that period at least, adopt the Boy Scout habit of doing. a good turn to some one each day. I further recommend that all citizens of this commonwealth become familiar with the spiritual and chivalrous quality of the Boy Scout oath:

“‘On my honor I will do my best:

" 'To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout laws."

“‘To help other people at all times.

" ‘To. keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight."

"Signed, GEORGE E. CRYER

"Mayor.”
