The first month of 2022 has passed. Is it just me, or did it
go by rather fast? And if I didn’t get to say it in the last newsletter, Happy
New Year Pio Pico!
February is a very busy month for our nation. Filled with all
kinds of celebrations and holidays. Just to name a few, it’s Black History Month,
the Chinese New Year (celebrating this year as the year of the Tiger). On February
2nd we have Groundhog’s Day, a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that goes as far back as to 1840 and we better
bundle up, we have 6 more weeks of winter folks! We also have the remembrance of
Raising the American Flag on Iwo Jima, which was on February 23rd,
1945.
And we cannot forget Valentine's Day, Washington and Lincoln’s
Birthday, President’s Day… but for us Scouters, February marks the Scouting
Anniversary on February 8th! Oh and also, Scout Sunday, which this year will fall on February 6th,
2022.
Update on New California Youth Protection Requirements
As you all may have heard, a recent bill (AB 506) was passed by the State of
California requiring volunteers and staff of Youth Service Organizations to complete training in reporting
child abuse and neglect and undergo Live Scan background checks.
AB 506 is effective immediately!
All adults registered
in the Greater Los Angeles Area Council must complete the state’s training to
participate in any Scouting activity. Any non-unit registrants (Commissioners
& Merit Badge Counselors) will need to take the training as well.
Generally, parents not in a leadership role including Lion Parents & Tiger
Partners are exempt from training.
For questions on if
your specific situation requires training and background checks, please visit https://californiascouting.org/faq/

History Corner
By Lou Smith, Pio Pico District Vice Chair
Boy Scouts yesterday acted as traffic officers at Seventh Street and Broadway. They directed their efforts at what is commonly called “jaywalking” on Los Angeles’ busiest downtown corner at the busiest time of the day from 4 PM to 6 PM.
When the Los Angeles Safety council which is in charge of the campaign of education to reduce accidents in this city appealed to the police department for additional officers to work as traffic officers during No Accident Week, they were told that no officers were available
The Boy Scouts offered their services and late yesterday they demonstrated that with a larger traffic force there will be fewer accidents These boys pointed out to pedestrians the “GO” and “STOP” signs which direct automobiles and street cars should be obeyed by pedestrians.
The lads kept the four corners clear of congestion, and it was noticeable that traffic flowed more freely safety experts say. Pedestrians were allowed only to cross at the “GO” signal and no accidents occurred during the boys’ watch. In the past jaywalking has been the cause of many fatal accidents at that corner.
