September brings in the start of a new academic school year, with the holiday seasons not too far behind. September has a handful of observances to remember, Like National Suicide Prevention, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, National Preparedness Month and Patriot Day, which occurs in September of each year in memory of the people who lost their life during the 9/11 attacks in 2001. May the memory of those gone never be forgotten.

“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” Harry S. Truman

September 3, 1922 – Fanfare Band Here Is Unique (LA Junior Times, Page 7)

Los Angeles Boy Scouts Have Organization That Has Won Fame

Los Angeles boasts another novelty, and the local troops of Boy Scouts are responsible. The official Boy Scout Band here is said to be the only boys' fanfare band In the United States. That means that in the forty pieces which make up the band there is not one reed Instrument.

The band was organized a little more than six months ago, but it has already made a name for itself. In the few months of its existence, it has played in public on a number of occasions and has furnished music for many of the Boy Scouts' own rallies.

Founded in February of this year by Arthur Letts, the band, under the direction of Phillip Memoli, a professional musician of the city, has been steadily growing. Today it numbers forty members, each one a Boy Scout and a nonprofessional. Jazz has no influence whatever in the programs given. Only standard, classic selections are played, but they are played well. The band has another distinction. It is one of the few organizations of its kind in the city that is on an absolutely non-commercial basis. Most bands, it is said, have a price, and may be hired for various affairs and functions. The Boy Scout band cannot be hired.

The last public appearance of the band was at the Pageant of Progress at Exposition Park last Thursday. Previous occasions when the Boy Scouts' Band has played were at the Children's Exposition last spring: at Exposition Park, which was, by the way, the first public appearance of the band, and at Arthur Letts's big birthday party at his famous Hollywood home last June.
