Pio Pico Newsletter- August

Welcome August! I hope all you folks had a great time up at Camp and are ready for a new year of scouting adventures! I know most of our scouts have already started or will be starting school this month but that doesn’t mean that Summer is over just yet. August falls within the summer season, so we still have some warm weather to enjoy before the Autumn months take over.

While you were out in the wilderness, I hope some of you took advantage and did some star gazing. August is known for meteor showers, in fact, the Perseid meteor shower takes place every year starting around mid-July to late August but this year, the peak of the shower was between August 11 through the 12th. If anyone was able to capture it on camera, please send me your photos, I would love to share that with the district.

Did you know that August has month long observances, just like some other months but something I wasn’t aware of is that August holds an observance called; What Will Be Your Legacy Month and it really got me thinking…What will be my legacy? It’s a deep thought, right? For Lord Robert Baden-Powell, his vision was simple. He brought together a small group of young boys all who came from different backgrounds, to embark on an experiment of what would be camping, wood crafting, life saving skills and patriotism. His vision started small and grew, now reaching over 54 million scouts, in almost every nation on earth. His legacy is Scouting. What will be your legacy?

July 30, 1922 – Scouts Enjoy Summer Camp (LA Junior Times, Page 6)
Many Boys Have Great Time on Annual Outing
Play in the Snow of the San Bernardino Peaks
Fishing for Trout and Long Hikes Popular

Slightly over 200 Boy Scouts 207 to be exact enjoyed the annual Boy Scout summer camp, held this year at Camp Radford In the San Bernardino Mountains.

Each day was a full one for the boys. They rose at 5:55 a.m. and retired at 9:30 p.m. The intervening hours were spent in hiking, fishing, playing and Scout tests. There were two swimming periods a day for each boy. The boys arrived in camp shortly after noon of the 3rd inst. The rest of the day was spent in assigning boys to cabins, unpacking, making beds and so forth. At 3 p.m., they all went' swimming. The next day they observed the Fourth with a special patriotic program, and on the 5th Inst., they all settled down to their regular camp life.

Many hikes were taken to nearby points of interest. On the 6th Inst., severity-four boys made a six-mile trip to Barton Flats. On the following Saturday eighty-six boys went on an all-day trip to Big Bear Lake, a fourteen-mile hike. The next Monday thirty-seven more boys took an all-day trip to Jinks Lake. From, the lake the party climbed the mountainside and played in the snow. The next day seventy-five of the boys started out on a two-day hike to "Old Grayback." a round-trip hike of thirty-five miles. The party camped for the night at Dry Lake at the foot of the mountain and the next morning climbed the peak to see the run rise.
Trout fishing was a popular occupation. Strings of eight or ten good-sized trout were frequently brought into camp. Scouts washed their own clothes and cobbled their own shoes.
